Poison Control Information
It can be scary if you or someone else swallows, inhales (breathes in), or comes into contact with something that might be poisonous. Knowing how to get help quickly is important.
If symptoms are serious (for example, not being able to breathe, collapsing, or having a seizure), call 911 right away.
It may not always be clear if the substance is poisonous, or if the exposure was enough to cause problems. In these cases, don’t guess! Get in touch with Poison Control. They will help you decide what to do. You can call or get help via an interactive tool called webPOISONCONTROL®. Both methods are free and available 24 hours a day.
- Call – You can always call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
- webPOISONCONTROL – You can access the webPOISONCONTROL tool on the Poison Control website. You can also download the tool as an app for your smartphone. You should not use this tool if the person exposed to the substance is younger than 6 months or over 79, has pre-existing medical conditions, is pregnant, or if the exposure involved more than one substance. Call the number above instead.
Text “POISON” to 484848 to have the Poison Control phone number and the link to the online tool saved to your smartphone.
Whether you call or use the interactive tool, be ready to give information about the person (including age and symptoms) and the substance (including the name and how much the person was exposed to and when).
